PICA SPECIAL NOTICE
Happy spring everyone, finally!
It’s been a very long winter. I’m going to keep this note short and to the point. We have recently become aware of some unsettling developments from WFN. Last week, WFN posted a public announcement regarding their intentions to impose property taxes AND land transfer taxes. This applies specifically to cottagers on Parry Island. See link below for more details:
As many of you are aware, WFN ratified their Land Code last year and this seems to be the next step in that process. I would encourage you to review the documents located on their site. We will be getting legal opinion over the next few weeks and will share the information that we obtain with PICA members as soon as we have more details.
Unfortunately, we do not have any further details other than what WFN have posted on their website.
Here are some highlights of the new proposed laws:
- Specific mentions that leaseholders ARE subject to land transfer and property taxes under the proposed laws
- These taxes would be in addition to any lease payments
- Wasauksing member-controlled lands are exempt from taxes
- Any taxes levied are based on an assessment yet to be conducted, and are retroactive back to January 1, 2018
- We have until June 8, 2018 to reply in writing, and we plan on doing so on behalf of PICA members
